Happy Holidays!

Dear Year 1 and 2 children,

We hope that you are all keeping safe, well and happy.  We can't quite believe it is the summer holiday and what a year it has been!

We just want to say how sorry we are that we can't celebrate the end of the year with all of you as we normally would.  We miss you all very much and often think about how you're getting on.

Year 2 children - Well done on having such a wonderful 2 years in KS1.  You have been a fantastic year group and we wish you all the best as you progress into Year 3.  We are confident that you will continue to be brilliant and we will be checking in with your new teachers to see how you are getting on.

Year 1 children - We look forward to seeing you all again in August as you begin Year 2.  Don't worry if you haven't been to school for a while.  We will help you settle back in and we will have fun learning together again.

If you are starting at a new school, we wish you the best of luck and please keep in touch.

Take care and have lots of fun this summer holiday.

From all the Year 1 and 2 team.

At St Mary's, Year 1 and 2 children follow the Letters and Sounds scheme for Phonics.  Online Phonics lessons continue to be available every day.  Year 1 lessons are available from 10.30am and Learning to blend lessons from 11am at the link below.

Please read this letter first before starting the Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons as it includes some important information on internet safety.

If you are in Mrs Mosedale's phonics group, or you would like to have a go, please practise writing words that begin with 'wa' but it sounds like 'wo'.  For example, watch, wander, was etc.

Next, can you think of words that begin with 'qua' or 'squa' but sound like 'quo' or 'squo'.  For example, squash, quad, quality, squad etc.

Finally, try to use some of these words in your own sentences.

English activities

As we have now moved into the Summer season, we would like you to write about what Summer means to you.  What do you see? What do you do? What is the weather like?  What do you enjoy most about Summer?  What do you dislike about Summer?

Please watch the PowerPoint below first to give you some ideas.  You could also print out the sheet below and draw a picture to go with your writing.

You could also try a Summer word search. There are 3 levels to choose from.

* We will be doing lessons 3 and 4 with the Year 1 children who are attending school on Thursday and Friday. *
Year 2

History activities

Continuing with our Seasides in the Past and Present topic, this week we would like you to find out about how Seasides have become more popular.

Watch this slideshow to find out more.

Fill in one of the sheets below to show what you have learned. It is recommended that Year 1 complete sheet 3A and Year 2 complete sheet 3B.

Art activities

As we are on a Summer theme this week, here is a reminder of our Art challenge from a couple of weeks ago.  It has been great to see some of your fantastic creations so far.  Please take a look at our Home Learning Photo Gallery.

Week beginning 22nd June 2020

As this week is Virtual Sports Week, most of our activities will follow a sporty theme.  We hope you enjoy taking part and we can't wait to see how you get on!  Please email your photos/videos to your class teacher.

If you're in Mrs Mosedale's Phonics group or you would like to have a go, please practise writing sporty verbs (action words) with the suffix -ing.  For example, swimming, jumping, racing etc.

Remember there are three main rules for adding the -ing suffix.

Rule 1 - Simply add -ing to the end of the verb eg. jump - jumping, twist - twisting

Rule 2 - Double the consonant and add -ing.  This is usually for words which contain a short vowel sound and end with a single consonant eg. hop - hopping, skip - skipping, swim - swimming etc.

Rule 3 - Drop the e and add -ing eg. race -racing, ride - riding etc.

Practise using these -ing words in some fun sentences.

English activities

As it is Virtual Sports Week (see PE activities further down for more details), you are going to have some sports-related English activities to complete this week.

English - Writing activity (Mon - Weds)

This week, we are going to be exploring 'bubbles'.  Please watch and listen to the story Bubble Trouble.

Imagine you were floating away in a bubble.  Write about what could happen to you in full sentences and really try your best to use your imagination.  Use the following questions as prompts to guide you with your writing.

How did you get in there?

Where would you go?

What might happen?

How would you get out?

English Writing activities (Thursday & Friday)

Draw yourself inside a bubble passing over a place of your choice.  You could do this on a plain piece of paper or by completing the sheet below.  Try to include a caption (sentence) to describe your picture.

Now we would love to read your ideas for your own version of the 'Bubble Trouble' story.  Hopefully, you have already thought about this by answering the questions above.  This time, we would like you to plan your story in a little more detail.  You can do this by writing your story ideas straight down on a piece of paper or you can fill in the sheet below.
We would love to read your story ideas so please email them to your child's teacher.

St Mary's Community Art Project

Thank you very much for those who have sent in their fantastic pictures so far.  If you walk past school, you will notice that they have been laminated and are looking great hanging along the school fence!  If you haven't completed yours yet, don't worry, it's not too late.  You can still send one in!

From Mrs Ayres' letter dated 6.5.20 - School is really quiet without the children and we miss them so much.  Wouldn't it be fantastic if every child drew a self-portrait of themselves on an A4 sheet with their arms outstretched which we could put on the perimeter fence?  Not only would it brighten up the fence but it would be a daily reminder of who makes our school community so special.  If you would like to take part in this please draw yourself with your arms outstretched, colour carefully and add your first name only.  On your daily walk you can post your pictures in the letter box on Station Road outside Picasso class or post them to school if you don't live close by.  We look forward to receiving them.

Week beginning 25th May 2020

As it's Half Term this week, we won't be setting any Home Learning activities.  Please take the time to enjoy yourselves and hopefully the lovely weather (fingers crossed)!  We will continue to set Home Learning activities for both Year 1 and 2 children from the week beginning 1st June.

All of our Year 1/2 team send their best wishes and we hope you are all keeping safe and well.

Take care!

Week beginning 18th May 2020

VE Day 8th May 2020 - 75th Anniversary

Here is a powerpoint to find out more about VE Day and some fun colouring sheets.

Mrs Mosedale asked her Nanna who is nearly 92 how she celebrated VE Day on 8th May 1945.  She was 16 at the time and lived in the outskirts of Leicester.

She said, "The news that the war was over came in the middle of the night.  We joined the neighbours in the street...In the evening my sister and I went into town joining the crowds of people at the Clock Tower...lots of young soldiers, rejoicing, dancing, singing.  Then home. Buses were curtailed (stopped running) early evening.  Work to be done next day.  Street parties were to come.  Much relief as you will imagine."

Photo of people celebrating in Leicester City Centre. Can you see the tram in the background?

It would be great to see photos of how you celebrated VE Day.  Please email them to your class teacher and we will share them in our Home Learning Photo Gallery.
