Happy Holidays!
Dear Year 1 and 2 children,
We hope that you are all keeping safe, well and happy. We can't quite believe it is the summer holiday and what a year it has been!
We just want to say how sorry we are that we can't celebrate the end of the year with all of you as we normally would. We miss you all very much and often think about how you're getting on.
Year 2 children - Well done on having such a wonderful 2 years in KS1. You have been a fantastic year group and we wish you all the best as you progress into Year 3. We are confident that you will continue to be brilliant and we will be checking in with your new teachers to see how you are getting on.
Year 1 children - We look forward to seeing you all again in August as you begin Year 2. Don't worry if you haven't been to school for a while. We will help you settle back in and we will have fun learning together again.
If you are starting at a new school, we wish you the best of luck and please keep in touch.
Take care and have lots of fun this summer holiday.
From all the Year 1 and 2 team.
If you would like to carry on with some home learning over the summer holiday, you can continue to use Active Learn for reading books and maths games. Year 2 children can also continue to access Times Tables Rockstars.
Here are a few other activities that you might find useful.
Welcome to the Year 1 and 2 Home Learning Page.
We hope you are all keeping safe and well. Thank you so much for the photos that have been sent in so far. Please continue to send them in as we love to see them. It is great to see the children having so much fun with their home learning.

We have also included the links to Letters and Sounds and White Rose Maths for those who want to continue with those activities.
We hope you all have a fantastic summer and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Finally, try to use some of these words in your own sentences.

As we have now moved into the Summer season, we would like you to write about what Summer means to you. What do you see? What do you do? What is the weather like? What do you enjoy most about Summer? What do you dislike about Summer?

Week beginning 22nd June 2020
As this week is Virtual Sports Week, most of our activities will follow a sporty theme. We hope you enjoy taking part and we can't wait to see how you get on! Please email your photos/videos to your class teacher.
If you're in Mrs Mosedale's Phonics group or you would like to have a go, please practise writing sporty verbs (action words) with the suffix -ing. For example, swimming, jumping, racing etc.
Remember there are three main rules for adding the -ing suffix.
Rule 1 - Simply add -ing to the end of the verb eg. jump - jumping, twist - twisting
Rule 2 - Double the consonant and add -ing. This is usually for words which contain a short vowel sound and end with a single consonant eg. hop - hopping, skip - skipping, swim - swimming etc.
Rule 3 - Drop the e and add -ing eg. race -racing, ride - riding etc.
Practise using these -ing words in some fun sentences.

As it is Virtual Sports Week (see PE activities further down for more details), you are going to have some sports-related English activities to complete this week.

Topic activities
St Mary's Community Art Project
From Mrs Ayres' letter dated 6.5.20 - School is really quiet without the children and we miss them so much. Wouldn't it be fantastic if every child drew a self-portrait of themselves on an A4 sheet with their arms outstretched which we could put on the perimeter fence? Not only would it brighten up the fence but it would be a daily reminder of who makes our school community so special. If you would like to take part in this please draw yourself with your arms outstretched, colour carefully and add your first name only. On your daily walk you can post your pictures in the letter box on Station Road outside Picasso class or post them to school if you don't live close by. We look forward to receiving them.
Week beginning 25th May 2020
As it's Half Term this week, we won't be setting any Home Learning activities. Please take the time to enjoy yourselves and hopefully the lovely weather (fingers crossed)! We will continue to set Home Learning activities for both Year 1 and 2 children from the week beginning 1st June.
All of our Year 1/2 team send their best wishes and we hope you are all keeping safe and well.
Take care!

VE Day 8th May 2020 - 75th Anniversary
Here is a powerpoint to find out more about VE Day and some fun colouring sheets.
Mrs Mosedale asked her Nanna who is nearly 92 how she celebrated VE Day on 8th May 1945. She was 16 at the time and lived in the outskirts of Leicester.
She said, "The news that the war was over came in the middle of the night. We joined the neighbours in the street...In the evening my sister and I went into town joining the crowds of people at the Clock Tower...lots of young soldiers, rejoicing, dancing, singing. Then home. Buses were curtailed (stopped running) early evening. Work to be done next day. Street parties were to come. Much relief as you will imagine."
