Phonics

At St Mary's, Year 1 and 2 children follow the Letters and Sounds scheme for Phonics.  Online Phonics lessons continue to be available every day.  Year 1 lessons are available from 10.30am and Learning to blend lessons from 11am at the link below.

Please read this letter first before starting the Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons as it includes some important information on internet safety.

If you're in Mrs Mosedale's Phonics group, practise writing contractions and use them in your own sentences.  For example, cannot - can't. I can't believe how warm it is today.  How many different contractions can you remember? Here are some to get you started:

is not - isn't         do not - don't        could not - couldn't       I will - I'll

English - Writing activity (Mon - Weds)

This week, we are going to be exploring 'bubbles'.  Please watch and listen to the story Bubble Trouble.

Imagine you were floating away in a bubble.  Write about what could happen to you in full sentences and really try your best to use your imagination.  Use the following questions as prompts to guide you with your writing.

How did you get in there?

Where would you go?

What might happen?

How would you get out?

* Watch this space for an additional writing activity about Bubble Trouble for Thursday and Friday. *

St Mary's Community Art Project

Thank you very much for those who have sent in their fantastic pictures so far.  If you walk past school, you will notice that they have been laminated and are looking great hanging along the school fence!  If you haven't completed yours yet, don't worry, it's not too late.  You can still send one in!

From Mrs Ayres' letter dated 6.5.20 - School is really quiet without the children and we miss them so much.  Wouldn't it be fantastic if every child drew a self-portrait of themselves on an A4 sheet with their arms outstretched which we could put on the perimeter fence?  Not only would it brighten up the fence but it would be a daily reminder of who makes our school community so special.  If you would like to take part in this please draw yourself with your arms outstretched, colour carefully and add your first name only.  On your daily walk you can post your pictures in the letter box on Station Road outside Picasso class or post them to school if you don't live close by.  We look forward to receiving them.

If you're in Mrs Mosedale's phonics group, your suffix this week to recap on is -er.

Write a list of words which contain the suffix -er.  For example, bigger, tighter, straighter etc.  How many more can you find?  Try to remember the different rules eg. doubling the consonant for words with a short vowel sound (big to bigger) and changing the y to an i (funny to funnier).

Now try to include them in sentences and write them down. (Don't forget your capital letter and full stop, question mark or exclamation mark!)

VE Day 8th May 2020 - 75th Anniversary

Here is a powerpoint to find out more about VE Day and some fun colouring sheets.

Picture 1

Mrs Mosedale asked her Nanna who is nearly 92 how she celebrated VE Day on 8th May 1945.  She was 16 at the time and lived in the outskirts of Leicester.

She said, "The news that the war was over came in the middle of the night.  We joined the neighbours in the street...In the evening my sister and I went into town joining the crowds of people at the Clock Tower...lots of young soldiers, rejoicing, dancing, singing.  Then home. Buses were curtailed (stopped running) early evening.  Work to be done next day.  Street parties were to come.  Much relief as you will imagine."
