Year 1 & 2

Welcome to Year 1 and 2. Your child will be in one of three classes – Elizabeth Class, Stafford Class or Teresa Class. Below you will find lots of information to support your child's learning journey this year and lots of photographs of learning in action.

International Week
Our new school year started with International Week where each class learnt about a different country. Teresa Class explored India, Elizabeth Class found out more about Poland and Stafford Class learnt about Nigeria.
During the week, the children also experienced flamenco dancing and samba drumming.

English
This term, we have started our writing based on the story, Last Stop to Market Street. This has included some drama activities where the children have pretended to be different characters from the story.  Some children went on the 'hot seat' as the rest of the class asked them questions about their character.
The children have written some fantastic stories about CJ's adventures with his Nana.

Geography - Where do I live?
This term, we have been exploring the four countries of the UK, their capital cities and their famous landmarks.

More recently, we have zoomed in to our local area of Hinckley and explored the main buildings in town, especially those close by to our school.

This term, we have been looking closely at the history of our school and have thought about what school life would have been like for children during the Victorian period. We went for a walk around our school looking at different features, comparing them to old photos. The children have also compared their school life to the school life of children in the past.

The children have been exploring natural art for our ‘Explore and Draw’ topic.  We have been inspired by the art of Andy Goldsworthy and have been very impressed with the children’s own creations.  Using a selection of twigs, stones and leaves, the children created an amazing range of pictures and patterns. We definitely have some budding artists in Year 1 and 2!

We are so very proud of how the children performed our Nativity, ‘Everyone loves a baby’ at the beginning of December. We started the week with a dress rehearsal which was performed to the rest of the school. The children learnt their lines and songs amazingly well and were very enthusiastic throughout! Thank you to all the parents who came to watch the children perform last Tuesday and Wednesday. They certainly appreciated you being there and enjoyed showing you what we had been working on over the last few weeks.

On Monday 12th January, Year 1 and 2 experienced what it would have been like to come to school in Victorian times. They sat in rows, worked hard on their handwriting and the boys and girls even played separately at playtime! They also played (and made) some Victorian games.

Beaumanor Hall Residential

Some of our Year 2 children along with Mrs Mosedale, Mrs O'Hara, Mr Bond and Mrs Chiriou had a fantastic time at Beaumanor. We were trainee pirates for the day and took part in a variety of activities. We also ate our tea and breakfast inside the main Hall. The children slept well and the weather was beautiful for our second day. In the morning, we took part in team challenges to develop our problem solving skills. We finished with a picnic in the sunshine and played on the playground before returning back home.

The Queen’s Hat experience

This term, we have been writing a story based on the story ‘The Queen’s Hat’ by Steve Anthony. In the story, the Queen’s hat blew away and the Queen’s guards chased it all around London! Like the Queen, the children experienced wearing a hat on a very windy day!

Famous Landmarks

The children are designing and making fantastic famous landmarks in our Construction Areas. This supports our work on continents in our current Geography topic, ‘Our Wonderful World.’

Habitats

For our current Science topic, the children have been exploring the plants and animals that can be found in seaside habitats.

Practical Maths

Mrs O'Hara's Maths group made their own 3D shapes to help them count how many vertices they have.

Making Birds

In Art, the children have been sketching a variety of birds. They have also been focussing on the details of their feathers.

DT - Chicken Coops

Last term, the children completed their ‘Stable Structures’ topic by designing and making fantastic model chicken coops. They used a variety of different cutting and sticking skills as well as working well together as a team.

Food for Life Day

In December, the theme of our Food for Life Day was potatoes. We took part in various potato activities including making mashed potato, creating potato animals, potato printing and decorating Mr Potato Head. Many thanks to those parents who were able to join us in the afternoon.

Glo Dodgeball

Just before Christmas, Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a glow in the dark session of dodgeball. They had a great time!

Terrific Toys

In our current History topic, we have been exploring how toys have changed over the last 100 years. We looked closely at how Nintendo games consoles have changed over time and put them in order to create a timeline.

My Body

In Science, we have been exploring our five senses. The children especially enjoyed smelling and tasting!

The Way Back Home

In English, our writing has been based on the story The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers. To bring the story to life, we have also taken part in experiences including going on a flight and exploring the moon.

Spiral Art

During our current Art topic, we have been recreating spirals using different medium including chalk on the playground.
